The Corner - Discussions on issues of the day Betryal of Intelligence

Facts Sheet

Valerie Plame was a covert agent who was active in the field. This was confirmed by the special prosecutor, three judges, and the head of the CIA.

There was no "the leaker" as there were many leakers including: I. Lewis Libby, Ari Fleischer, Richard Armitage, and Karl Rove.

The outing of Plame didn't simply affect her career, it destroyed a full field branch and endangered many contacts who would now be identified in context with Plame.

"There was no crime commited" is the biggest fabrication of the case. The obstruction charge of Libby was a direct result of throwing sand in the prosecutors eyes.

Robert Novak is allowed to continue writing on this case despite being a principle player in the case. He was responsible for outing Plame, and it served no information in doing so.

The Outing of US Intelligence Service
and the outing of Valerie Plame Wilson

July 14, 2003 - Robert Novak writes an article revealing to us that the wife of a former ambassador was also a CIA agent. We learned that she worked in the counter proliferation division. Her name became the center of a White House controversy and so far has resulted in a felony conviction of a high ranking official in the VP office. The case is dead quiet regarding criminal charges against officials and a civil suit by the Wilsons against VP Dick Cheney, I. Lewis Libby, Karl Rove, and Richard Armitage.

Over the next 4 years the nation would be deceived by many as the case would unfold in public. Even today there are many who still make false statements about Valerie Plame not being covert, even though she says she was, the special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald says she was, Judge Reggie Walton says she was, and through a statement read in the House Oversight Committee, CIA chief Michael Hayden said she was covert.  Even Judge John Bates who dismissed, on subject matter jurisdiction, stated that she was covert, and even said that a senior officer erred in concluding that Plame sent her husband to Niger.

The other lie would be that Patrick Fitzgerald "knew who the leaker was" and it was "Richard Armitage". The statement would basically imply that most of the witnesses in the Scooter Libby trial were liars. Judith Miller simply didn't print Plame's name but was told about her by I. Lewis Libby. Additionally, Matt Cooper and others have written about their conversations with higher officials and demonstrated what looks to be a campaign versus a simple slip from some out there official.

I'm still piecing together many bits to help provide a logical narrative in video form and for now recommend you to read, Anatomy of Deceit by Marcy Wheeler. The book does an amazing job of keeping track of documents and statements on file and clearly demonstrates the timeline and facts of the case. Her preface on Judith Miller's coverage for the NYC of the Iraq war leads in well to the story as does her coverage of the encounters between Rocco Martino, Italian freelance spy, and Elizabeth Burba of Panarama magazine in Milan.

Over time I will create pages to demonstrate various aspects of this case and why it has become, for me, like a Rosetta stone for deciphering the cryptic behavior of an administration out of step with the laws it was supposed to uphold and honor. They have done neither and only when seen across the many issues and many losses can one really understand that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
